Toronto is renowned for its film festivals – with September’s star-studded TIFF drawing the most attention – but cutting-edge, curated festivals can be found all year-round. March 9 to 18, 2018 sees TIFF Kids International Film Festivalscreening a plethora of family-friendly flicks plus activation areas for hands-on fun. Then Hot Docs Festival takes over the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in mid-town Toronto, from April 26 to May 6, 2018 with the best in documentary film making from around the world.

UNIQUE SHOPPING AND CRAFTING

If you’re a fan of distinctive, handmade items, One of a Kind Spring Show & Sale should be on your shopping list. This massive show, held semi-annually in Toronto (it happens again in the fall), showcases hundreds of artisans and their wares from March 28 to April 1, 2018. If you prefer to do it yourself, Creativ Festival is bursting at the seams with fibres, fabrics, yarns, beads and more, April 13 and 14, 2018.

MUSIC FESTIVALS AND CONCERTS

The unofficial launch to Toronto’s jam-packed music festival season is Canadian Music Week. Part tradeshow, part conference, part festival and all music, the event will be hosted again this year by the entertaining Paul Shaffer, and runs from May 7 to 13. For a complete change of pace, there will be many concerts around the Easter holiday (March 30 to April 2, 2018) including Bach’s B Minor Mass presented by Toronto’s Baroque orchestra & choir Tafelmusik April 5 to 8, 2018 and Mendelssohn’s beautiful Sacred Music for a Sacred Space on March 28 and 30, 2018.

MAJOR LEAGUE SPORTS

Sports fans are spoiled for choice as a confluence of pro sports happens this time of year in Toronto. The Jays are back on April 1 (no foolin’!) with the much-anticipated home opener weekend against the Yankees and the MLS Cup Champion Toronto FCreturns February 27, 2018. Toronto Rock is in action and there’s also exciting end of season play by the Raptors and Leafs. Toronto’s newest pro sports team, The Wolfpackbrings rugby and its tradition of fan interaction to Lamport Stadium aka “The Den.”

EASTER LONG WEEKEND

Whether you celebrate Easter or not, there are plenty of things to do on the long weekend March 30 to April 2, 2018. Lorde (the singer!) is at the Air Canada Centre March 29, 2018. Don your Easter bonnets – and your running shoes – and head to the picturesque Beaches neighbourhood for its annual Fun Run followed by the Easter Parade.
